A Cupid in the Tank?

Love is in the air? Nope, it is in the aquarium!
Meet Kohaku, the koi with a love shaped marking on its head. We first spotted Kohaku in a local fish shop. The moment our sight laid on Kohaku, we decided that we must bring it home.

Koi Kohaku

Currently Kohaku lives in a huge tank with other koi, cichild and river fish happily. We have trained it to feed from our hands just like all our koi.

Freshwater pipefish

Pipefish

Pipefish are close relatives of seahorses. They have armored body and fused jaws that form a tube-like snout. Most pipefish live in marine condition but there are a few species that live in freshwater. Pictures shown in this article is the pipefish of the genus Doryichthys which lives in freshwater.

Similar to seahorse, pipefish eat by sucking food through their snout. They like to hide between aquatic plants to ambush their preys.

Pipefish share similar breeding behavior with seahorse as well - the males are responsible for parenting. They have a special body part where females deposit their eggs into. Breeding in captivity is possible if kept in species-only tank and provided optimum condition.

Pipefish are not aggressive feeder, therefore they need to be kept in species-only tank. Starving is extremely dangerous to pipefish; they need to have a constant live food supply such as Daphnia Moina, tubifex worm, or fish fry. They can be trained to consume frozen food such as frozen blood worms but most will only accept live baits.

Tubifex Worm Feeding Cup
We make sure our pipefish have a constant supply of food by providing them with a cup full of tubifex worm in the tank.

Daphnia Monia
We feed them a variety of food including Daphnia Moina, Tubifex worm, brine shirmp, shrimp's egg, and fish fry. The picture shown is the hatching container for brine shrimps.

We keep a school of eight pipefish in a tank with rocky substrates, jawa wood, and aquatic plants. Some shrimps are added into the tank to provide the pipefish with eggs.

Pipefish are rare in the aquarium trade. Some fish stores might sell brackish water pipefish as freshwater pipefish, hence identifying the species of your pipefish is crucial.

Hillstream loach!

Hillstream loach is a very unique fish with astonishing beauty. In the nature, this fish can be found in fast flowing streams; its flattened, streamlined body shape allows easier movement in the fast flowing water.

Hillstream loach is a pacifist fish that is suitable for those who are looking to keep a unique freshwater fish in their aquarium. However, a well aerated aquarium is essential for Hillstream loach since they can only thrive in aquarium with high oxygen content. They will eat algae and other detritus in the aquarium, so feeding is usually not a problem.

Guppy and Marimo

Guppies are great companion for Marimo as they help to keep ugly bugs/worms such as mosquito larvae away from your Marimo. Moreover, guppies are hardy fish that do not need aeration as long as you only keep few of them in your Marimo container. However, guppies could not survive in chlorinated water; you will need to treat the water with anti-chlorine which can be bought cheaply in most fish stores.

Our Discus and Angel fish's outdoor tank!

We would like to share some pictures and video of our angelfish tank with all of you! Angelfish are fascinating fish and they will come to greet you in front of the glass once they recognized you! They require large tank to thrive and variety of diet to ensure healthy growth! We feed them the Sinkable Discuss Food as staple diet and occasionally tubifex worm and water flea.

A true beauty among the fish!

This pair had bred in the past.

Talking Catfish

The talking catfish (aka Striped Raphael catfish) is a unique catfish in the aquarium hobby, they are popular community fish as they are peaceful and tolerate most water conditions. They are known as talking catfish because they will make some grunting noise when remove from water.

Talking catfish originate from Amazon basin, they can grow up to 6 inches but normally only juveniles are on sale in the local fish shop. They are nocturnal fish and will hid itself in the day, so feeding of talking catfish is mainly at night, they accept a wide variety of food including sinking fish pellets. It is advisable to include some hiding spots for them to reduce their stress, driftwood is recommended for them to mimic their nature habitat.

Penang Betta, the fighting fish that won't fight

Penang Betta

Penang Betta, also known as Betta pugnax, is a native species of Penang, Malaysia, and some other Southeast Asian countries. It can be found in forest streams with fast flowing water and moderate vegetation cover. Most Penang Betta's found in the market are from the wild as there are not many breeders who breed them.

In Aquarium

Penang Betta has a light brown coloration. Some might be striped and have darker coloration. As the title implies, Penang Betta's are not as aggressive as the Siamese fighting fish (a.k.a. Betta splendens). They can be kept in shoals (i.e. with other Penang Betta's) in large enough tanks. Penang Betta's can be kept in community tanks as well, although small fishes might find themselves fit into Penang Betta's large mouth.

Spawning

The most interesting part of Penang Betta is its special spawning strategy. This Betta species is among the few mouth-brooding fishes; males will keep eggs in their mouth for around two weeks until they hatch into healthy Betta fry. During this period, Penang Betta is very aggressive and territorial as it will attack any fish that wanders near. Each batch of hatchlings will consist of around 30 to 60 fry. Once released from their father's mouth, the fry will be big enough to feed on brine shrimps.

Penang Betta is a must-try local species for serious Betta lovers and collectors. Its unique spawning behavior is fun to be observed. We currently have some Penang Betta's in stock. Please check "Our Products" page for more details!
