Dechorination method

One of the basic in aquarium keeping is the dechlorination of water use in the fish tank. Chlorine are presence in the tap water it is mend to kill the germs and other harmful microorganism in the water which cannot be filter out. Yet, those chlorine is fatal to aquarium fishes and need to be remove from the water by all means. Some beginners in the fish keeping hobby make the fatal mistake of using tap water in their fish tank before dechlorinate it.There are a few ways to remove chlorine from the water, either by chemical means or naturally.

Anti-Chlorine conditioner

The most common method are using anti-chlorine conditioners, this can be found on most fish stores and it is inexpensive. Usually, a cap full of chlorine is able to treat a 2 ft aquarium tank, but it varies among different brands of anti-chlorine conditioners, so check the labels carefully before using it.

Evaporation

This method is commonly use when treating a huge amount of water. The tap water containing chlorine are being left in a huge water containers for a few days, this allow the chlorine to evaporate from the water and make the water fish-safe. it is a cheaper method compare to using anti-chlorine conditioner.

Tubifex Worm's Insight

Tubifex Worm

As an aquarium hobbyist in Malaysia, I am sure that you have heard about tubifex worm or "cacing merah". Tubifex worms are common live fish food in this country.

Tubifex worms are near-perfect live fish food; they provide proteins needed by fishes. Fish fry that eat tubifex worms grow faster than their counterparts which feed on artificial food. In Malaysia, the worms are fed to discus as a staple diet due to their low cost compared to that of pig hearts or beef hearts.

Tubifex Worm

Tubifex worms in fish shops are mostly collected in the wild. They must be kept in clean water for few days before being used as fish food - wild caught tubifex worms might carry diseases or parasites that could be fatal to fishes. You could often see aquarium shopkeepers cleaning their newly received tubifex worms like mad (wo)men, but if you buy your worms from irresponsible shopkeepers, you may bid your fish farewell.

Tubifex Worm

Aquarium hobbyists are advised to clean any tubifex worm that they purchase to prevent any "accident." This could be done by keeping the tubifex worms under running water for few hours or by changing their water every three hours.

We do sell frozen dried tubifex worms instead of live ones! Click Our Product for more information!

Hatching Brine Shrimp

Brine shrimp are among the few available live food source that is suitable for small fish fry, it is small enough for most livebearers' fry to eat, for example, mollies, guppy, swordtail and platy.

 Brine Shrimp

Buying brine Shrimp egg

Brine shrimp come in bottles containing their eggs, it is often brown in colour and powder-like, you will need to keep the eggs in cool and dry environment, a refrigerator is a good place to keep them.

 Brine Shrimp

Hatching Brine Shrimp (Malaysian Home Method)

Hatching brine shrimp eggs is actually very simple, you will need to have a water container (plastic or glass),  a liter of dechlorinate water, two tea spoon of marine salt, aquarium aeration accessory and any amount of brine shrimps egg (depend on the amount you need).

First, pour the dechlorinate water into the container and then add in two tea spoon of marine salt. Next, stir the water and then add in the brine shrimp eggs before putting in the water aeration. Lastly, put the container in a well-lit place (but not under direct sunlight) under room temperature, it should hatch in around 24 hours or shorter.

Feeding the fry

Once the brine shrimps hatch, you should be able to see lots of tiny pink moving creatures in the water. You will need to filter them out from the salty water using a piece of cloth or suitable net before feeding them to your fish fry. This is to prevent the egg shells of the brine shrimps from entering your fish fry's tank, it will potentially choke the fish fry if they eat the egg shells.

Availability in the market

Brine shrimp eggs can be fins in some huge retailer stores and it is not very expensive, normally they will stock up frozen brine shrimp too.

Tips and Warning

-Brine shrimps can only live for around a day or two, so only hatch the amount you needed, a little amount of eggs can hatch into lots of brine shrimp already, just like the pearl sago.

-Remember, you need MARINE SALT! Not the cooking salt or aquarium salt.

-Frozen brine shrimps cannot be used as an alternative to life brine shrimp when feeding small fish fry, this is because the fish fry need  live food.

Snails' Caring and Tips

Snails are amazing creatures in the aquarium, they are beneficial to your aquarium ecosystem since most of them are able to clean organic materials which will pollute your water, some specialize in cleaning algae while some specialize in cleaning organic materials in the substrates. They are always a fine addition to a planted tank or community tank.

Caring for snails is very easy and simple compare to caring of fish and other aquatic animals, they are quit hardy and require little attention. But, for them to thrive in your aquarium, you still need to put a little effort when keeping them.

Buying Snails
When buying snails, try to avoid mature snails, this is to avoid buying an old snails since snails have short life span. Avoid buying snails that come from outdoor ponds since there may be carrying disease or parasites transmitted through birds' dropping. However, aquarium snails are free of disease since there won't be bird's dropping in an indoor aquarium isn't it?

Introducing to aquarium
First, you need to make sure your aquarium temperature is not high, snails aren't afraid of polluted water but they are vulnerable to high temperature. Room temperature around 27 to 30 degrees work the best.

When first introduce into an aquarium, some snails will have air bubbles trap into their shells when transferring them from one place to another, this will cause them to float when release into the aquarium. This is actually not a problem or disease and it won't harm the snails, they will be back to the surfaces. Ramshorn snails are known to trap bubbles in their snails often.

Behavior of snails first introduced into aquarium
Ramshorn snails will be actively moving around once introduced into an aquarium while the trumpets will not move for a long time, sometimes until nights fall since they are only active during the evenings or nights. Apple snails and Sulawesi snails will either be active or inactive when introduced into an aquarium, this depend on the aquarium temperature and water quality.

Feeding
Snails in a planted tanks or community tanks don't need to be feed,, they will eat up the organic materials inside the tank. Snails won't attack plants except the big and hungry apples snails, those apples are known to cause massive destruction in planted tanks.

If you are keeping snails only in a tank, they will need to be feed once a day every two days, algae pellet or fresh vegetables are their favorite.

Disease
Aquarium snails are only known to have the shell's corrosion disease which is not transmittable or harmful to other snails or fish. As the name implying, this disease corrodes the shells of the snails, it is normally not fatal. This disease can be found on every kind of snails, this is cause by insufficient amount or calcium in the water. It can be easily cure by adding in lime stones or coral stones into the aquarium, frequent water change will be effective too. Please be noted that some snails have a little corrosion on it's core or "center", it is not considered a disease since this is normal on all sorts of snails even if sufficient calcium is in the aquarium. Sulawesi snails will always have a corroded shell's ends that cannot be cure or explain.

Breeding
Ramshorn snails lay jelly like egg sacks on the surfaces of the aquarium or any ornament inside the tank, this can only be seen by good lighting

Trumpet snails lay their eggs insides the gravel while the trapdoor snails will give birth to small trapdoors directly.

Sulawesi snails will lay egg sacks which are white in colour and can be seen by naked eye, each sac contains one to two snails.

Apple snails will lay lots of eggs which is pink in colour above water level.
